Thinking About Your Drinking |

How Much Do I Drink? |
 |
Good question
Answer: Most people have absolutely no idea!
This is because different drinks contain different amounts of alcohol. On these pages we will be talking about UNITS of alcohol. (Every 8 grams of pure alcohol in a drink counts as one unit).
Here is a general guide to how much you can drink to consume ONE UNIT of alcohol. It uses pub - not home - measures.
One Unit of Alcohol =
- Half pint of ordinary strength beer
- One glass of table wine
- One glass sherry
- One single whisky
There are about:
- 30 units in a 70cl bottle of spirits;
- 7-9 units in a 70 cl bottle of table wine (10-13% alcohol by volume)
- 13 units in a 75 cl bottle of sherry
BEERS and LAGERS present us with a more difficult problem, because different brands vary enormously in strength. For example, the half pint = one unit equation applies if you drink beer or lagers with 3% alcohol by volume but some "special brews" are three times as strong.
Below you will find a brief Checklist for Beer and Lager Drinkers; if you find your particular favourite you can calculate your approximate units. (Check the side of the can to find out the strength of other lagers.)
Remember these quantities are in half pints; cans are of various sizes - pour the drink into a half pint glass to find out how much you are drinking.
Carlsberg Pilsner, Castlemaine XXXX, Red Stripe & other beers of 3%-4% alcohol by volume
Fosters Export, Holsten Pils, Kronenbourg 1664, Tennents Extra& other beers of 5%-6% alcohol by volume
- Half pint = One and a half units
Carlsberg Special Brew, Kestrel Super, Tennents Super & other beers of 8%-10% alcohol by volume
- Half pint = Two and a half units
Most beers are of 3-5% strength, but Gold Label is 10.9%! Ciders and perry are between 5-8%.
