Thinking About Your Drinking

How can I stick to my strategy?

By setting yourself achievable targets.

It can be useful to commit yourself to changing your drinking by making a contract with yourself.

When drawing up a contract, it is important to make your objectives achievable. If they are unrealistic you will probably fail - which is the best excuse to retreat to more drink! Remember that even the longest journey starts with a just one step: and usually a pretty small one at that!

In this contract you will see a space for REWARDS.

These are important. You have already decided that life with alcohol will be better not worse. If you can reward yourself for your success by going to a movie, for a swim, buying yourself a book or anything else you enjoy doing, you will feel your life is becoming fuller - not emptier - without drink.

When trying to find suitable rewards, it might be useful to look back to the things you used to do before you were drinking so much.

Perhaps you are worried that your rewards are going to cost you more money? Don't forget that you'll be able to afford a few more treats if you are spending less on alcohol.

Now it's time to think about drawing up your own contract. You might begin with short-term contracts - for a few days or a week - and then, when you feel you have begun to make progress, having a longer-term contract for the kind of drinking pattern you want to live with in the future.
