PROFESSIONALS

Services

We offer a comprehensive range of services that help our clients deal with their addictions.

The Engage Project

Engage is a new service for SAdAS following an extended pilot in Staines.

The Engage project is a Tier 2 drug and alcohol service with an extensive remit. The service covers 3 boroughs in Surrey and comprises the west of the county.

The team of 4 is extremely busy delivering a wide range of interventions to a wide range of clients and is ably and crucially supported by volunteers who are trained to a high degree in providing psychosocial interventions including CBT, Solution focussed work and of course motivational interviewing.

Without our volunteers who all provide a highly professional service we could not see the numbers of people that we do and we believe firmly that without this community involvement SAdAS would not be the accessible service that it is. Primarily the volunteer arm to this service sees people with drug or alcohol problems in community venues across our catchment area.

We also have volunteers who sit on our operations meetings and provide us with admin support - so often an ill considered requirement when services are commissioned. We aim to integrate our volunteers wholly into all the services we provide.

The Engage projects remit is huge. We offer a range of interventions to anyone using drugs or alcohol who doesn't require prescribing or whose needs are not so complex as to require mainstream treatment as such. So we offer help to those who are using cannabis for the first time right through to those people requiring injecting equipment and emergency interventions.

We work very closely with our tier 3 colleagues in the treatment system and, both refer in and chase people who disengage from their service, and who are at risk. The service is very much based on an outreach model although we also do group work and offer longer term and drop in work from rented premises in each of the boroughs.

The service started in April 2010 so it is soon to give details of numbers seen and interventions delivered but as stated previously the service is very busy and of course has the ubiquitous targets to achieve. We are confident that it will do just that.

PROMOTE Housing Team

PROMOTE Housing Support is a new service, running since April 2009 to offer tenancy support to adults within the criminal justice system or recently left the criminal justice system, and are having difficulties maintaining their tenancies due to their offending behaviour.

We know that this support is invaluable if we are to prevent the revolving door syndrome that so many ex prisoners face.

We cover the whole of Surrey and accept referral predominately from Police and Probation, but will accept from other sources such as: Arrest referral, borough councils, housing associations, self-referral and other sources.

This is a unique service within our Drug and Alcohol organisation as clients referred are not expected to have a problem with drug or alcohol. However, if it is assessed that this is the case, a swift internal referral to our sister service LINKS Housing is made to ensure the client receives a seamless signposting service.

In addition to the tenancy support, the team are very proactive and access additional funds via other charity applications in order for the client to enhance their learning, fitness and quality of life.

OMNI

OMNI outreach is an assertive outreach team working to engage high risk and dually diagnosed people.

Typically these people tend to be polydrug users with significant mental health problems who are causing significant disruption to the community.

This service covers the county of Surrey and has been in existence since 1999. The team consists of 5 people and although the faces may have changed since its inception the underlying principles and work practices remain similar.

LINKS

LINKS Housing Support team offers short term (up to 2 years), tenancy support to adult clients throughout Surrey.

Main areas of need required for referral are: Risk to tenancy/licence, benefit issues and debt.

Over and above this, the team will assist with: Criminal justice issues, budgeting skills, advocacy, mental health, drug/alcohol, vulnerability/risk, facilitating engagement with other agencies, social isolation and life skills.

Clients are referred to us from a variety of sources such as: Local housing authorities, housing associations, social services, CMHT's, internal departments, drug and alcohol teams, GP's, night shelters and self-referrals.

Clients also benefit from active fundraising by staff, which enables them to take part in sporting/health activities, attend educational classes (vocational and non-vocational), anger management, equipment/resources, and transport to and from venues.

We have had many successes over the years and the short list below is an example of some of these:

  • Resolved neighbour disputes, working with the client, neighbour and other agencies.
  • Assisted clients to access alternative accommodation within and out with Surrey.
  • Assisted clients into detox and rehab and supported them through this process.
  • Helped clients to flee domestic violence and access a refuge.
  • Assisted clients to flee abuse and intimidation.
  • Worked with clients and other agencies to improve family relationships.

CIAG

The CIAG roles really came about from sitting in successive Community Safety meetings and watching the same peoples names come up week after week.

Currently we provide CIAG workers to 5 of the 11 boroughs of Surrey paid for on an individual basis by each borough community safety structure. The aim of the work is to engage with people on an outreach basis and help those people to access mainstream, services.

Typically people referred are causing disruption in their local communities involving arrests and community chaos, usually have drug or alcohol problems or of course both, often have mental health problems in conjunction with housing/homelessness issues. These are people who are often not one services priority but across the whole system cause significant impact.
