Making Your Drinking Safer

Tips and hints on reducing the harm associated with your drinking
Each of these ideas is very small in itself, but each one can help reduce your drinking by a small amount and thereby reduce the harm you experience:

Change Your Drink: If you drink pints – cut down to halves. If you drink doubles, ask for singles. If you drink strong lagers or beers choose brands with a lower alcohol content. If you drink wine, why not add water or soda.

Eat While You Drink: Alcohol’s effect is softened by food, however, avoid salty foods which will make you thirstier.

Alternate Your Drinks: Instead of sticking to alcoholic drinks, alternate them with soft drinks. Some soft drinks such as tonic water or low alcohol beers look like alcoholic drinks.

Time Your Drinks: You may find that you gulp your drinks down. Set yourself time limits for each drink or make sure you have a gap between drinks.

Avoid Buying Rounds: It can be difficult to avoid buying rounds, but if you get involved you may have to have as many drinks as there are people in your group.

Delay Your First Drink: If you have your first drink later in the day you may find you drink less in total. So if you have your first drink at lunchtime, why not wait until evening. If you start in the evening, why not go out an hour later?

Don’t Drink and Drive: If you are going out for a drink – don’t drive.

Fire Safety: Smoking and drinking at home are significant causes of fire. If you fall asleep in bed or in an armchair with a cigarette in your hand, there is a very real risk of burning yourself to death. Try and avoid this situation, but if you can’t, make sure you have fitted smoke alarms in the key rooms. It is also important to avoid cooking, especially pans of oil, if you are likely to fall asleep.
