Have You Injected Drugs?

If you have share injecting equipment you risk contracting disease. This section contains information about these diseases and advice if you have concerns.
If you have ever injected drugs using injecting equipment that may have been used by someone else then you could have contracted hepatitis B or C, or HIV. You could also have contracted them if you have had unprotected sex (i.e. not using a condom) with someone who has injected.

These blood borne, life threatening diseases are usually transmitted in two ways:
  • By sharing used injection equipment
  • By unprotected sex with someone who already has one of these viruses
If you think you are worried about either of these you should:
  • Consider pre-test counselling
  • Have early testing of your viral status
  • Ensure that drug-using partners seek testing
If you still have a drug-using partner:
  • Consider inoculation against hepatitis B by contacting your GP, local Genito-Urinary Medicine clinic or NHS drug and alcohol clinic
