Boxmoore Services

Surrey’s leading drug and alcohol charity has launched a new service aimed at young people in trouble with drugs. The team will use an assertive outreach style already successfully used by SADAS' Omni outreach team.
The team will be targeting those young people most at risk from problem drug use. These are usually young people who have a number of difficulties that can lead to addiction problems in later life. These include chaotic use of drugs and alcohol, exclusion from education, family break-up, and trouble with the law amongst other things.

SADAS Executive Director, Mike Blank said, 'We want to try and reach troubled young people who are not engaging successfully with mainstream services. We know that assertive outreach is very useful in getting to and working with these clients and helping them to get the help they need. We also know that by intervening at an early stage we can help to reduce the risk of later addiction problems or accidental overdose'.

The team will be based at SADAS offices in Guildford but will take referrals from across Surrey. The target age group is 13 – 25 years and referrals can be made from any source including the young person themselves.

As part of the Boxmoore team SADAS also runs an offroad diversion scheme. The scheme is targeted at young people who have been excluded from mainstream school provision and are attending (or not) a Pupil Referral Unit. The rationale behind this service is that through our work within the remainder of SADAS it is quite clear that people who are excluded or do not attend education run a far higher risk of falling foul of the criminal justrice system and problematic drug use.
