Alcohol in the Workplace

Many, if not the majority of, people with alcohol problems are in employment.
Indeed, people in employment are more likely to drink over the safe limits than those without jobs.
  • Around 12-13 million working days are lost per year due to alcohol related absenteeism.
On top of that are the costs of accidents and underperformance.

That means that tackling alcohol misuse in the workplace has a double advantage:
  • It can improve productivity; and
  • It can identify people who may be at the early stages of their problematic drinking career.
So what can you do?

Every business should have an alcohol policy which encourages people with alcohol problems to seek help at the earliest opportunity. A policy does not mean you have to tolerate dangerous or unacceptable behaviour, but it does mean you help staff make the most of what they have to offer your business.

Companies should have information and leaflets on display giving information about alcohol, its effects, where to get help and the company's alcohol policy.

Every business should know how and where to refer someone for confidential help and advice.

Companies might also consider these approaches:
  • Many young people receive important parts of their education in the form of apprentice training. Alcohol information should feature as a part of this training.
  • Alcohol awareness courses should be offered to all drivers using company vehicles.
  • Pre-retirement courses could offer advice on safe drinking in later life.
It is known that certain occupational groups, for example those involved in catering, are likely to have a greater likelihood of experiencing alcohol related problems. If you work with a high-risk group targeting education campaigns at these groups could be both useful and prevent the possibility of future litigation.

It should not be forgotten that the NHS and other public sector organisations are the largest employers in the UK, therefore, public bodies should lead by example and ensure that good alcohol polices and workplace services are in operation.
